Drama Schools Teach Great Lessons About The Craft Of Acting

So you want to be an actor. Weather it's something you are just thinking about or if you have actually done a few school plays or something like that, you should probably get yourself into one of the many acting schools or drama schools out there.

Now, this can get a little confusing. 'Acting Schools' or 'drama schools' don't necessarily have to be something at a university or college. If you live in a city like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, or Chicago for instance you are going to have people that teach programs that last 1-4 years that are not associated with a traditional school. These course can be just as good or better, so don't dismiss them when searching.

Drama School Scholarships
Many schools give all kinds of different scholarships just like a regular university or college does for regular students or athletes. Keep this in mind when think of going to school.

The Best Drama Schools
If you've read some of my other stuff you will know I don't like the word best. Like any program, you get what you put in. All of these programs are good and what fits one person best, many not fit the next. Interview these schools or acting classes. Get a feel for how the program is run. That being said, there are some programs that do have a long standing reputation for being at the top of the list.

Top Drama Schools

Yale School of Drama - New Haven, CT
Always toward the top of the list for the serious actor, their theatre and drama programs are top notch. The list of alumni is a who's who's of people you know.

Julliard School of Drama - New York
Drama, theatre, singing, and dancing are all top of the line at this legendary New York institution.

Academy Drama School - London, England
Known as 'the Academy' this British drama school sadly closed it doors in 2007. A new school called The Actor Works opened with many of the Academy faculty and has been going strong since.

Stages Performing Arts School
- Victoria, BC, Canada
Offers many classes in many different disciplines ranging from kids dance and ballet to Shakespeare theatre.

Other Acting Classes and Schools across the country

Los Angeles Acting Schools
As far as film and television go, LA is the place to be. There are so many acting classes here that to list them all would make for a 500 page website. Instead, since your webmaster (me) lived there for 10 years and dabbled in the acting game, we are going to list some of the better options based on personal experience and reputation.

Note: There is some real garbage and scams out there in LA. Get opinions from people you know or get with a reputable organization like The Actor's Network to help you sift through the garbage so you don't get ripped off or waste your time.
